For the corners i normally use rounded rectangle shape tool instead of elipse on a new layer and just keep the part that i need for the layout. Averagely i'll use 1600 x 1600 canvas, obvisuly it'll depend of what kind of track i'm gonna do and i can do a background averagely in 30 mins or 1h if i'm lazy or even if i'm lucky i can find a image that works almost perfectly as background
