Chapter 1-1

It's the millenial Grand Star Festival in the Mushroom Kingdom. People have come from all across the Starlands for the festivities, even as far away as Sarasaland.

King Toadstool: (Clears throat) Welcome, one and all, to the Grand Star Festival! It's a great pleasure as the Mushroom King to host this millenial event with so many people from across the world celebrating.

As the king was giving his speech, Mario was at home, waiting for his brother Luigi to get ready for the festival.

Mario: Come on, Luigi, the princess will be waiting for us! It's the Grand Star Festival today, we have to hurry!
Luigi: Coming!

Luigi soon leapt downstairs in a simple green sweater and baggy white trousers.

Luigi: Sorry it's not much... I was in a hurry...
Mario: Don't be silly, bro! You look fine! Now let's go, we don't want to leave our friends waiting much longer!

Mario and Luigi made their way to the town centre where Peach, Daisy and Yoshi were waiting for them.

Peach: Hey, Mario! Hey, Luigi!
Mario: Hello, Peach! How are you doing?
Daisy: You had us worried that you weren't gonna come out at all! What took so long?
Luigi: Uh... I was looking for something good to wear for the festival...
Daisy: You look fine, Luigi! So, what do you guys wanna do first?
Peach: Well, I was going to check on my father. He didn't look too great after the speech he gave.
Daisy: Again? I wanted to go see the food stalls! It's so tiring even getting here to see you, Peach... but it's fine, I understand. We can go check on him if you'd like.
Peach: But what about the others? I don't want to burden you after you've barely just gotten here. I'll go check on him. You have a good time at the festival, Daisy.

At that, Peach left to go check on the king, leaving Daisy with Mario, Luigi and Yoshi.

Daisy: (Sighs) Well, what do you guys wanna do first?
Yoshi: Yoshi, Yoshi! (Well, I think checking the food stalls sounds good.)
Mario: Yoshi's right, I'm starving. Me and Luigi haven't eaten all day.

With that, the four of them entered the marketplace and checked out the food stalls.

Wario: Fuck's sake, we've been here all day and not a single person has come to buy anything from our stall.
Waluigi: Wait, Wario! Look! It's Mario and his entourage!
Wario: (Screams) Holy shit! Quick, get into disguise!

Just before Mario and co. arrived at Wario's food stall, the dastardly trio got into disguise.

Wario: Hello! What would you like to buy?
Waluigi: We have... uh... Garlic! Lots and lots of Garlic! O-oh, and Turnips and Carrots, too!
Mario: Do you guys sell any of those Star Cookies?
Wario: O-oh yeah, we do!

Wario handed a box of Star Cookies to Mario and friends, hoping they'd go away as soon as possible.

Luigi: (Squints) I see... And how much is that?
Waluigi: Uh... only 5000- uh, I mean, 50 coins!
Mario: Just 50? Oh, okay, here you go then.

Mario paid for the Star Cookies and he and his friends went on their way, and Wario and Waluigi got out of disguise.

Wario: Phew, we dodged a bullet there- Hey, Wapeach, what the hell are you doing?!
Wapeach: (Giggles) Lighten up, Wario. It's the festival. Even Bowser and Bowser Jr. are having a good time.

Bowser and Bowser Jr. walked past, holding Star Sparklers, eating food, playing carnival games and having a good time.

Junior: Daddy! Look! It's Mario and his friends!
Bowser: Mario! Hi!
Mario: Oh, it's you, Bowser. Hope you're not here to cause trouble again.
Bowser: (Laughs) Don't be silly, Mario. It's the Grand Star Festival, we wouldn't dream of it.
Mario: Right, well anyway, we're just-

A loud bang erupted from the night sky.

Junior: (Whimpering) Dad, what was that?
Daisy: Odd, the fireworks weren't supposed to go off until seven. It's only half past five.

Peach came running to Mario and co., clearly struggling for breath.

Yoshi: Yo-Yoshi? (What's wrong, Peach?)
Peach: (Gasping for air) It's... it's the Power Star in the castle! It just exploded!
Bowser: What?! How the heck can a Power Star just explode?!
Luigi: I think I know... look up!

Star-shaped meteorites started spitting out of the sky like broken shrapnel.

Wario: Oh my God! Take cover! Waaaaahhh!

In mere seconds, the town was thrown into complete disarray.

Peach: Quick! Come to the castle!
Daisy: But the Power Star-
Peach: It doesn't matter! We need to get to safety!

Peach led everyone to the castle, where the king lay on the floor, shaking.

Peach: Father! Father, are you okay?!
King Toadstool: Urrrgh... I'm fine...
Mario: Can you stand, Your Majesty?

Mario helped the king up and led him to a safer space in the castle.

Bowser: Thanks a ton, Peach.
Junior: (Crying) I'm scared...
Bowser: I know, son. It's... it's not safe out there right now.
Luigi: What in the Worlds even happened, Peach? Aren't the Power Stars supposed to be indestructible?
Peach: Yeah, they are. It's... weird. Even when the Grand Star was sent down earlier, this has never happened. Not in forever. My family has historically always kept tabs on this kind of thing.
Daisy: Then what the hell was that all about? Surely the great Rosalina wouldn't send down a meteor shower unprovoked.
Peach: I don't know, I wasn't even allowed to enter the castle until the door flew open.

Mario overheard the conversation from upstairs and joined them after a short while.

Mario: Hold on, the door just... burst open? On its own?
Peach: It would've had to. All of the guards were outside the castle since the festival began, and my father's too frail to push open the vast doors to the castle.
Mario: That's strange. If the Power Star broke then surely it wouldn't have even had any energy.
Bowser: I agree with Mario. Doors that big don't just open by themselves.
Peach: Says the one who just barges in through the ceiling whenever I host a tea party... Anyway, what do we do now?
Daisy: I say we wait for the meteor shower to stop then go look for the other eleven Power Stars. Maybe if we get them all together, we'll be able to restore this one.
Bowser: You're seriously saying we look all across the Starlands to find some stupid Power Stars? Hah! Kiss my ass.
Yoshi: Yoshi Yoshi?! Yoshi, Yoshi Yo-Yo-Yoshi! (Do you WANT to get killed in the meteor shower, you dumbass?! You were literally the one to say it wasn't safe just a few seconds ago!)
Mario: (Sighs) Well anyway, I agree with Daisy's plan. I say we go get the Power Stars as soon as we can.
Luigi: Agreed, the storm's bound to have eased off at least a little by tomorrow...
Peach: Well, I don't hear any objections, aside from Bowser contributing nothing as always. But let's get some rest, we could use it for tomorrow.
Bowser: (Growls) Fine.
