Give decors the ability to apply some secondary effects similar to some items such as shrinking the racer that hit it, blowing up, covering the screen with blooper ink, giving a speed boost, and making the player that touched it get star power. These could be used to create more unique obstacles, such as lightning, land mines, a barrel of oil, the weird pegs on mk8 tracks, and the little stars that fall on gcn rainbow road.
Unrelated idea, but being able to mark someone's track as a favorite. You could then have a list of your favorite tracks in your profile for your easy access, and a list of (hopefully) good tracks that you liked for other people to check out.
